Coon Rapids, Minnesota

The Mississippi River shaped this city long before its streets were platted — from Dakota canoe routes to the rapids that gave the city its name, Coon Rapids grew from river-bottom farmland into Anoka County's most populous community.

A Living History

River Roots and Rapid Growth

The Mississippi River's western bank defines Coon Rapids to this day — and it defined the city's identity from the very beginning. The Dakota people navigated the river's rapids for generations, using Coon Creek's confluence with the Mississippi as a gathering point. When Euro-American settlers arrived in the 1840s and 1850s, the area's fertile river bottom soil and abundant timber made it an immediate draw. The name "Coon Rapids" derives from the modest but noticeable rapids in the Mississippi at this location — not from the animal, as many assume, though raccoons were certainly plentiful in the river corridor.

The community developed steadily through the late 19th century as farming families settled the broad flat plain north of Brooklyn Center. The establishment of the Minneapolis, Anoka and Cuyuna Range Railroad in the early 20th century connected the community to the broader metro economy and spurred modest commercial growth in the village center. Through the 1920s and 30s, Coon Rapids remained a quiet river-edge community of small farms and scattered homes.

The postwar boom transformed everything. Coon Rapids incorporated as a village in 1952 and as a city in 1959, and population exploded through the 1960s as Minneapolis families sought affordable suburban housing north of the city. By 1970, Coon Rapids was the fastest-growing city in Anoka County, fueled by affordable land, improving highways, and the expanding regional economy. The Northdale Boulevard commercial corridor anchored retail development, and Coon Rapids Mall (now Riverdale Village) became an early anchor for north metro shopping.

Today Coon Rapids is home to approximately 64,000 residents, making it the second-largest city in Anoka County. Its long Mississippi River frontage — the most of any Minnesota city — remains a defining asset, preserved through the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park and an extensive trail system.

Pre-1850 — Dakota people use Coon Creek's confluence with the Mississippi as a gathering and travel corridor.

1840s–50s — First European settlers arrive; river bottom farmland and timber draw homesteaders to the area.

1952 — Coon Rapids incorporates as a village; suburban development begins in earnest.

1959 — Village becomes a city; population growth accelerates through the 1960s at record pace.

1974 — Coon Rapids Dam (now a regional park) is decommissioned as a power source; becomes a signature recreation asset.

Today — 64,000 residents with the longest Mississippi River frontage of any Minnesota city — preserved as trails and parkland.

Community Character

The Mississippi Runs Through It

The Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park is the city's crown jewel — a 5,000-acre natural corridor along both banks of the Mississippi offering fishing, hiking, and wildlife observation that feels worlds away from the urban grid. The dam itself creates a dramatic visual centerpiece, and the park connects seamlessly to Elm Creek Park Reserve and the broader Three Rivers Park District trail network. Residents enjoy over 80 miles of trails winding through the city's parks and open spaces.

Coon Rapids is served by both the Anoka-Hennepin ISD 11 and Coon Rapids-Robbinsdale ISD 281 districts, depending on location. Coon Rapids High School has a long athletic tradition. The city's METRO Bus Rapid Transit access — the Red Line extension discussions and existing Route 77 service — makes it one of the better-connected north metro suburbs for car-light households. The Riverdale Village shopping complex provides a full retail anchor for the region.
