Shoreview, Minnesota

Eleven lakes, 1,400 acres of wetlands, and one of the most awarded family addresses in the metro — Shoreview is the literal namesake of its own shoreline, a quietly excellent north-metro suburb that has landed on national "best places to live" lists again and again.

A Living History

From Turtle Lake Farms to Awarded Suburb

Settlement in what became Shoreview dates to 1850, when Socrates A. Thompson arrived from St. Paul seeking farmland and Samuel Eaton staked a claim on Turtle Lake — a lake Thompson is said to have named after catching a large turtle in its waters. The land had been ceded by the Ojibwe in 1837, and through the mid-19th century the area filled with farms scattered among its many lakes and wetlands.

For its first century the community was part of Mounds View Township, organized in 1858 as the population grew. The first railroad lines pushed through in the 1880s, but Shoreview remained largely rural until the postwar suburban wave reached the north metro. As subdivision pressure mounted, residents concluded that township government could no longer keep pace — and on April 23, 1957, they voted 853 to 748 to incorporate the Village of Shoreview, named for its many miles of lake shoreline. The population at incorporation was just 5,231.

Growth through the 1960s, 70s, and 80s gave Shoreview the bulk of its housing stock — ramblers and split-levels around its lakes, with a median construction year of 1981. The city invested early and heavily in public amenities, a choice that paid off in 1990 with the opening of the Shoreview Community Center and its Tropics Indoor Waterpark — one of the metro's first municipal indoor waterparks, expanded again in 2018 with the zero-depth Bamboo Bay play area.

Shoreview also became, improbably, the home of America's checkbook: Deluxe Corporation, the nation's largest check printer, ran its operations from a 49-acre Shoreview campus for more than three decades before relocating its headquarters to downtown Minneapolis in 2021. Today Shoreview is a fully developed community of roughly 27,000 residents — and one of the metro's most consistently decorated suburbs for family life.

Community Character

Lakes, Trails, and a Reputation for Livability

Shoreview's identity is built on water and recreation. The city counts eleven lakes and some 1,400 acres of wetlands, and roughly 15% of its area is water — the "Shoreview" name is entirely literal. The Shoreview Community Center draws over half a million visitors a year, while Snail Lake Regional Park, the Rice Creek North Regional Trail, and some 85+ miles of city trails and sidewalks knit the lakes and neighborhoods together.

Schools are served by Mounds View Public Schools (ISD 621), with Mounds View High School ranked among the very best in Minnesota — top-ten statewide with a 98% graduation rate. That school quality, paired with the lakes and the recreation, is why Shoreview keeps landing on national lists: Money Magazine's "Best Places to Live" three separate times and a #4 national ranking from Family Circle's "Best Towns for Families." Major employers cluster nearby — Deluxe's legacy campus, Land O'Lakes' adjacent Arden Hills headquarters, and the emerging Rice Creek Commons redevelopment on the former TCAAP site. For buyers, Shoreview delivers top-tier schools and lake-laced livability with quick access to both downtowns.
