Wayzata, Minnesota

The crown jewel of Lake Minnetonka's north shore — a village of 3,800 souls that carries more prestige per square foot than any community in the metro. Old money, new ambition, and one of Minnesota's most enchanting lakefront Main Streets converge on the blue water of Minnesota's most famous lake.

A Living History

The Queen City of Lake Minnetonka

The name "Wayzata" is Dakota — generally understood to mean "north" or "north shore" — a directional reference to the community's position on Lake Minnetonka's northern bank. The Dakota people knew this lake intimately, fishing its waters and traversing its shores across seasons. When Euro-American exploration reached Lake Minnetonka in the 1820s and 30s, the beauty of the lake made an immediate impression. Wayzata's founding as a Euro-American settlement is typically dated to 1853, when the first permanent homesteads were claimed along the north shore.

The defining event in Wayzata's history arrived in 1867 when the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad extended its tracks to the lake shore at Wayzata — making it the first and most convenient rail terminus on Lake Minnetonka. Almost immediately, the village became the departure point for the lake's celebrated resort experience. The Hotel St. Louis and other grand establishments rose near the depot, and Wayzata became the fashionable entry point for the Twin Cities elite seeking the lake's cool summer breezes.

The railroad brought something else too: wealthy permanent residents. Minneapolis businessmen, industrialists, and financiers discovered that a 30-minute train ride put them on the shore of one of the most beautiful lakes in the Upper Midwest. Through the Gilded Age and into the 1920s, Wayzata's north shore filled with substantial summer estates — and then, as the automobile superseded the train, permanent mansions. The summers-only community became a year-round residential address of extraordinary exclusivity.

Wayzata incorporated in 1906 and has maintained its small size — just 2.4 square miles — with fierce intentionality. The city has resisted annexation, resisted overdevelopment, and resisted every pressure to become something other than what it is: a small, beautiful, deeply prosperous lakeside village where the quality of architecture, the character of the lakefront, and the sophistication of the commercial district reflect a community that takes its own identity very seriously. Today its 3,800 residents make Wayzata one of the smallest but most consequential cities on the Twin Cities map.

Pre-1850 — Dakota people inhabit Lake Minnetonka's north shore; "Wayzata" — meaning north shore — describes their geography.

1853 — First permanent Euro-American homesteads claimed on the north shore; the village begins its slow accumulation.

1867 — St. Paul and Pacific Railroad reaches Wayzata — the lake shore is suddenly 30 minutes from Minneapolis. Everything changes.

1880s–1920s — Gilded Age estates fill the north shore; Minneapolis industrial fortunes build the mansions that define Wayzata's residential character.

1906 — Wayzata incorporates; the city deliberately limits its footprint to preserve the village character that defines its identity.

Today — 3,800 residents in 2.4 square miles — Minnesota's most prestigious small city, and the undisputed queen of Lake Minnetonka.

Community Character

Small City, Enormous Presence

Wayzata's lakefront downtown — a compact strip of restaurants, boutiques, galleries, and the beloved Wayzata Depot — is one of the most charming commercial environments in the state. Tables overflow onto sidewalks in summer as sailboats tack across Wayzata Bay in the background; in winter, ice fishermen dot the frozen lake while cross-country skiers glide the shoreline trail. The Wayzata Beach and lakefront park offer public access to the water that feels almost incongruous with the neighborhood's private wealth.

Wayzata is served by the highly regarded Wayzata Public Schools (ISD 284) — with Wayzata High School consistently ranking among the top three public high schools in Minnesota, drawing families from across the region who specifically choose Wayzata for the district. The school's academic rigor, arts programs, and athletic excellence make it one of the most sought-after public school placements in the state. Housing ranges from modest lake-view condominiums to historic lakefront estates exceeding $10 million — with the vast majority of the inventory in the $800K–$3M range that reflects Wayzata's position as the metro's premier lakefront address.
